For all the expert opinions that cable news and radio talk shows showcase, one must wonder whether those Pulitzer Prize winning journalists, Nobel laureates, and Ivy League professors would be willing to put their money where their mouths are.

Paco Del Martin Campo is a member of the student activists group Lucha. He also played a role in the 2007 hunger strike, and is currently active with Student Coalition on Expansion and Gentrification. Paco recently penned an article in the Spectator on the importance of activism, so Cub Pub thought we should get his views for the first installment of our activism feature. Cub Pub will begin a new running feature entitled "Is College the Place for Activism?" starting next week. The feature will include interviews with activists from various student groups in the Columbia community, as well as guests from off-campus. Hopefully, we will answer an important question - is student activism of the type we've seen in recent years relevant anymore?

1. The morning after pill might violate human dignity because conception preceded taking the pill. Now the person will be destroyed and killed.

2. Feminism made people into utilities by seeing them as what they do instead of who they are.

3. People tend to make choices about much of their life, like deciding to have a child, but it is not a fair choice when it could affect another human being.

Most middle school textbooks "suck," asserted copyright reform activist Karl Fogel at the panel on illegal downloading CPU hosted Wednesday night. Fogel's statement was one of several that made the night exciting for attendees. Though not explicitly concerned with illegal downloading, Fogel's assertion about the quality of textbooks might be seen as emblematic of his larger argument that the current copyright system is not in line with social priorities. Fogel was joined by several distinguished advocates on the issue.

Why is this misleading?

 

ROTC scholarship: $15k/year

ROTC is an option for every US college, it just isn't always on campus. Many times, multiple colleges' ROTC students will train at one campus. Columbia students do have the option of receiving the ROTC scholarship and training through SUNY Maritime.

I sat down with Chris Daniels, president of the Columbia University Democrats, this past weekend to get his opinions on the election, Obama's victory, and what it all means for the future of the nation. That bookstore across Broadway with tables of discounted books makes it's political feelings easily known. Stacks of Obama t-shirts sit next to the  book tables. A huge "Bush's Last Day" sign takes the subtitle spot at the top of the storefront. And inside there's plenty of anti-Bush, pro-Obama memorabilia - cups, mugs, and hats. On election night, Morningside Bookshop owner Peter Soter shared some  personal insights - beyond the t-shirt slogans - with CubPub.
