Ambassador of Romania Simona Miculescu to Speak at Adelphi University

Adelphi University’s International Initiatives Committee will host a lecture by the Ambassador of Romania Simona-Mirela Miculescu on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom of the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The lecture, “Women and Democratization: Challenges and Lessons Learned in Romania,” is free and open to the public.

The first woman in Romanian diplomatic history to serve as a foreign representative of the country, Ambassador Miculescu previously held various roles, including senior advisor for public outreach to the government of Iraq (2006-2007), foreign policy adviser to the President of Romania (2000-2004), and senior public information officer at the Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Kosovo (1999-2000). Prior to that, she was press secretary of the Romanian Embassy in Washington D.C. (1994-1998) and director of the press department within Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1994). She served twice as spokesperson for the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as senior media advisor to the Minister (1993 and 1999).

Due to her academic background and vast experience in the field of public communication, Ambassador Miculescu was able to forge an academic career, alongside her diplomatic career spanning more than 15 years. An expert in the area of management of international public relations, she has taught international public relations at two Romanian universities and developed the first Romanian curriculum in this scholarly field. Additionally, she has authored several books and articles. 

Ambassador Miculescu earned her doctorate degree in literature from Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and her master’s degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. 

The International Initiatives Committee (IIC) is a campus-wide group of faculty, administrators, and students charged with infusing courses and campus events with internationalized content. The IIC allows the University to offer dynamic programs such as its acclaimed Ambassador Series in intimate settings so students, faculty, and the public have the opportunity to hear first-hand, global perspectives on issues of international concern.
