This issue has consistently been brought up as a point of annoyance and frustration among Columbia and Barnard students. In fact, it has been looked at by leaders in student government in the past, but logistical problems with the swiping computer systems among other reasons including possible antagonism between Columbia women and Barnard women have prevented any headway.
In response to the long-standing impasse, the CU Democrats are planning a sit-in to get the attention of Columbia and Barnard administrators and solve the problem once and for all:
- Tired of having to be signed in to Barnard dorms or having to sign your friends from Barnard into your dorm? Do Something About It! The Columbia Democrats is protesting this policy with a SWIPE-IN SIT-IN on Thursday, March 31 at 8pm in Sulz Hall (Barnard Quad)! There will be music and free food.
- RSVP at this Google Spreadsheet. To get more information visit Tumblr or email dems@columbia.edu.
At the same time, though, SEAS's student council-- Engineering Student Council (ESC)-- already has plans for a "free electronic swipe" initiative that would give Barnard and GS students access to Columbia dorms. It has hopes that a pilot program will be up and running at East Campus dorms by the end of this academic year.
