It's very likely he's gone off the deep end, but for your amusement (unless you agree with him), here is George Will on how "America's obsession with denim reflects deep disorders in the national psyche".

Great Column
He might be off his rocker, but at least he had a coherent position. Wearing jeans are a big part of what people do, so it should be questioned.
That said, I think he's missed the real problem with jeans. For Will the conservative, Jeans reflect impulsive levelling and a paranoia about any expressions of inequality. To the contrary, these onetime expressions of equality and humility have become even more powerful indicators of social status. Jeans make an elitism out of poverty. Jeans with the rips and tears cost amounts that could never be afforded by any of the people the style supposedly represents. The jeans you get for $20 at Old Navy look clean, straight, and elitist. The ripped, rugged, jeans of work cost $100 from a Banana Republic in Union Square are bought by people who don't live like this. The real problem with jeans is the arrogance suggested by those who represent the hardships of others which they have not experienced, and then using them as their own status symbol.
Applause to Will for raising the issue. If everyone is gonna wear the same clothes, there should be a damn good reason for it. But Will's criticism is outdated. The problem isn't the "levelling" implied by denim, but the elitism.

jesus christ
they're jeans, everybody wears jeans. what's elitist about it? it's something to cover your ass, not a god damned status indicator. they might have meant something in the days of old, but today, they're just clothes. i wish george will would go back to being "the good conservative" and stop with the craziness.
not a status indicator?
you're attitude towards jeans is what Will criticizes. For Will, the phrase 'Just something to cover your ass with" would reflect the embarrassment about wealth and the nice clothes it can buy that leads people to wear jeans.
But that attitude is not shared by a lot of jeans wearers. Why do people spend crazy amounts of money at ridiculous clothing stores if all they want is something to cover their ass with. And why do these very stores make the jeans that try to look inexpensive, that rips and tears should make jeans more expensive?
